Events of the Historic Night
By night August 30,the streets around Kuala Lumpur is filled with public vehicles carrying the Federation of Malaya flags. Batu Road, for instance, is packed with cars, buses, rickshaws, bicycles and pedestrians. Young and old altogether eagerly, flocked towards the Selangor Golf Club. The night was pleasantly lit with decorations lights in the streets and surrounding buildings. Many shops along Batu Road open until late at night.
A special stage was erected on the field with colorfully decorated with colorful lights around the field as well. In the middle of the field there are three flag poles flying the UMNO flag on the right , the Union Jack flag in the middle and the Alliance flag on the left. While tens of thousands of people from various nationalities gathered around the field till the road. Also present that night was the official delegates, reporters and photographers from in and outside the country and the Alliance Party Leaders from across the country.

In the field, representatives of the Alliance members of UMNO, MCA and MIC of the States of Malaya and Singapore (12 delegates) took place around the three parts of the field. The front row holding a rope with a distance of 6 feet, 2000 UMNO youth members holding another rope.

300 Youth Alliance formed the honor parade in the middle of the field facing Jalan Raja (Clock Tower). The parade was led by Mr. Ismail Bontak.

Tunku Abdul Rahman was accompanied by 30 members of the Alliance on motocycle (15 UMNO, 10 MCA, 5 MIC) and two police motocycle escorts (outriders) arrived at Jalan Raja. The motorcycle procession started from the official residence YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman.
Upon arrival, Tunku was greeted by Dato 'Abdul Razak bin Hussein, Mr Saadon Minogue (Umno Youth chief), Dato' Sir Tan Cheng Lock (the President of the MCA) and V. T. Sambantan (the President of the MIC). Tunku was then accompanied to the stage facing the three flag poles.

All lights in and around the field was turned off until the whole area became pitch dark.

Lights were turned on again when the clock strikes 12 midnight marked the moment have arrived. This was followed by cries of "Merdeka" by people that shake the ground. [Spontaneously]
A team of 12 youths of the Alliance, which consists of 6 young men and 6 young lady (6 UMNO, MCA 4, 2 MIC) came forward carrying two trays. A tray to be filled with the Union Jack flag when lowered and another tray contained the flag of the Federation of Malaya. Tray containing the Federation of Malaya flag was carried by Ms. Dasimah followed by Mr. Ibrahim Tahir Abdul Majid and Ms Abdul Wahab.
The Union Jack was lowered by Mr Tahir Abdul Majid accompanied with the song God Save the Queen which was played for the last time as a sign the end of British administration in Malaya. lowering of the Union Jack flag was greeted with loud applause and cries of "Merdeka" which shook the whole field. [Spontaneously]
The Federation of Malaya flag was raised by Mr. Abdul Majid Tahir accompanied by Negaraku the national anthem played for the first time to the public on the historic night. After the flag of the Federation of Malaya reached the top of the post, shouts of 'Merdeka' has been hailed as many as seven times. Tunku Abdul Rahman received salute from the Youth line of Honour from UMNO, MCA and MIC and inspected the parade accompanied by Mr. Sardon Zubir. Tunku when around the field and inspected the 12 delegations of UMNO, MCA and MIC of the Federal states of Malaya and Singapore.

A team of 24 youth of The Alliance team led by Mr. Abdul Majid Othman come forth bringing a tray containing a gold chain that hung on it a gold medal engraved map of the Malay Peninsula and the picture of the Tunku on the map. At the edge of the circle map, the written word Bapa Kemerdekaan Tanah Air (Father of Independence of motherland), which is a title bestowed by UMNO to the Tunku.
The gold necklace was worn on Tunku's neck by Mr. Sardon Zubir Tunku followed by shouts of "Bapa Kemerdekaan Tanah Air" three times.
